Sample competencies profiles have been created to assist in the development of individualized profiles for some key staff positions or areas of responsibility. The profiles don't always match positions; sometimes they are designed to highlight a certain area of responsibility that an individual might have, rather than reflect the full nature of his or her position.  For example, supervisors frequently have other responsibilities. The competencies profile for supervisors is intended to highlight the supervisory responsibilities and would need to be added to in order to create a position profile for an individual.  

Competencies profiles can be useful in designing new positions, reallocating responsibilities, and planning for succession; and in guiding staff development.  They can also be used by those with career aspirations to plan professional development.  

The profiles should be considered starting points that will, in all likelihood, need editing and customizing to meet a particular library's circumstances.
