Communication with other systems

  • Best practice is to search the Directory of LAC Symbols and Interlibrary Loan Policies in Canada to determine a library’s interlibrary loan charging policy and library symbol.
  • When issuing ILL requests to non public libraries in Ontario or public and non public libraries out of province, you should always use the requests notes field to indicate that fees are, or are not acceptable.
  • The library MUST have a location record in VDX before you can use VDX to send your request.  Search “Locations” by library symbol. i.e.  BNV – North Vancouver Public Library.
  • If a location is a VDX user, the LAC record will show an ILL email address with ‘vdx’ in the address. Many Saskatchewan and Quebec libraries are VDX users, meaning requests will be updated with proper ISO statuses.
  • For requests issued to libraries accessible via Generic Script, ISO statuses will not be updated, though you can manually update statuses (using Informed Shipped, Informed Not Supplied) and use Received, Returned, Cancel, Send Public Notes actions as usual.
  • If you are unsure if the location is usable; if you receive a bounce-back email on a request you’ve issued; receive no answer from a lender after a reasonable amount of time, or have any questions about this process, please email . We will investigate with LAC and the lending location and ask the VDX vendor to re-configure the VDX location record as necessary.
